Students From ViA Enter Second Round of New Translators Contest 2009
After the first round of New Translators Contest 2009, students from Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences - Iveta Gaile, Ilva Šinta and Valda Jurāne - are invited to the second round. New Translators Contest is organized by ‘'Skrivanek Baltic'' and five Latvian universities - University of Latvia, Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, Ventspils University College, Daugavpils University and University College of Economic and Culture. Participants were asked to translate from three foreign languages - English, French and German - to Latvian. Four students in the German language group and ten students in the English language group have entered the second round.
Though this year's contest was also attended by students of science, only students of language and translation with the highest scores in the evaluation got the invitation to the final round. The main criteria of the evaluation were: correspondence with the original, the quality of language, grammar, punctuation and the use of language register. The evaluation committee consisted of teaching staff of all participating universities.
The final of the contest will take place on the premises of ‘'Skrivanek Baltic'' (one of the largest language service providers in the Latvian language) in early January. Students will have to translate around 400 words long text from the selected foreign language into Latvian without any supporting materials. They will be evaluated by ‘'Skrivanek Baltic'' translators and proofreaders. The results of the competition will be announced on the same day.
