Practical guide

Books. Currently the ViA Library comprises about 19 000 books: 53% of them are in English, the others in Latvian, German, Swedish, Norwegian, a.o. languages. Together with the collection of the city library there are about 90 000 items. The students have access also to services of interlibrary loan.

Printed Periodicals. The Library mainly subscribes to Latvian printed periodicals.

Electronic Resources. The Library subscribes to Latvian electronic database: NAIS (Normative Acts Information System), Letonika, LURSOFT, the electronic version of the official newspaper of the Republic of Latvia "Latvijas Vēstnesis", the Dienas Bizness, the Baltic Times, The ЧАС.

The required information is prepared upon request by the librarians.

Databases Nozare.lv, Leta 2000 Archive, eiropa.lv are accessible from any ViA computer.

Library Catalogue. ViA students may also find the necessary literature in the ViA Library and the City Library central catalogue ALISE.

Computers and the Internet. There are 13 computers available for students in the integrated library. The use of the library electronic central catalogue and databases are accessible from 8 computers without previous reservation of the time. There is wireless internet access available in library.

Paid Services. Copying, print-outs, foil laminating, comb-binding, scanning.

Overnight Bookings. The only samples that are in heavy demand may be borrowed from the ViA Library for one night.

Information for Library Users:

Books and other materials in the integrated library are labelled in 3 colours:

Red label - the only copy, must always remain in the library.

Green label - may be borrowed (term of the loan - two weeks).

Yellow label - ViA course book, may be borrowed for the duration of the respective course.

Vidzeme University Library and Valmiera Library offer book reservation on the internet from the electronic catalogue.

To be eligible to this service, you should be registered as a Valmiera Library or a ViA Library reader. Together with your reader's card (or ISIC card), you will receive your library user's name and password. The service is provided on opening the library central electronic catalogue.

When borrowing books, the return date is indicated on a fly-leaf in the front of the book. If necessary, the borrowing time may be prolonged, informing about it personally or by the phone 64207226, 26664430, e-mails: inga.gravele@va.lv.

Study materials and course books are lent to student groups (3 or 5 students per one book), and they are registered in one student's card. The student, whose card the material is registered in, is responsible for the return of the respective material.

Recent Accessions are displayed on a weekly basis, they are placed on a special shelf. Thus, library visitors are able to follow the novelties.

Urgent information regarding new internet resources, changes in the opening hours, etc., is announced by ViA e-mail and on the Library home page.

Visiting the Library, please observe silence. It is prohibited to use mobile phones, eat, drink, and bring big carrier bags into the reading room.
